NANAIMO — Occupants of a home near Bowen Park could be displaced for months after a fire.
Nanaimo Fire Rescue crews responded to a home on Doric Ave. Kerr St. on Wednesday, July 28 at 6:30 p.m. to find smoke rising from the top floor.
Capt.Alan Millbank said while nobody was hurt and most of the damage was contained to an upstairs bedroom, the home will require extensive repairs.
“It appears to be a mattress that caught fire, we’re just trying to figure out what the ignition of the mattress is,” Millbank said, who noted it appears the fire was accidental.
Millbank said four people are displaced: a family of three upstairs and a basement tenant.
“It might be several weeks to months, depending how fast they can get restoration in here,” Millbank said. “The tenants had no insurance, but the landlord had insurance.”
The family is receiving temporary lodging through the local Emergency Support Services program.
