NANAIMO — A man riding a motorcycle died after being hit by a truck on the Island Hwy. at Oliver Rd.
RCMP say it happened at about 5:15 a.m. when the driver of a southbound grey Dodge Ram D350 tried to turn left onto Oliver Rd. hit the motorcyclist travelling north.
Nanaimo RCMP Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien said the biker, a Nanaimo man, was critically injured.
“He was transported to the hospital and later declared deceased,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.
The motorcyclist was operating a newer model black Yamaha bike, O’Brien said.
He was not conscious or breathing during life-saving on-scene efforts provided by bystanders.
O’Brien said police are hoping for more witnesses to come forward to help with their investigation.
“We’re looking at a lot of factors, but at this point drugs and alcohol have been ruled out on the behalf of the one-tonne truck,” O’Brien said, who noted the truck’s driver remained on scene and cooperated with investigators.
Oliver Rd. near the crash scene has since re-opened after being closed for a few hours following the crash.
The fatal crash shut down access to and from the lower portion of Oliver Rd. (Ian Holmes/NanaimoNewsNOW)Join the conversation. Submit your letter to NanaimoNewsNOW and be included on The Water Cooler, our letters to the editor feature.
