NANAIMO — The Clippers are consistently moving players on to higher levels, and now one of their assistant coaches is moving on to run his own team.
Gaelan Patterson is now the head coach of the Surrey Eagles of the BCHL after two stints working behind the Clippers’ bench under Colin Birkas.
In the 2024-25 campaign, Patterson was part of a team that finished 29-21-4, with an explosive second half of the season.
That garnered him an opportunity to get an assistant coaching job with the Vancouver Giants in the WHL.
At the end of last season, Patterson found himself looking for a new opportunity, and the Clippers quickly reached out to add him to their staff.
Nanaimo got off to a strong start this season, and when the Eagles were looking to make a coaching change, they came knocking on Patterson’s door.
With his family based in the Lower Mainland and the chance to become a general manager and head coach in the BCHL, it was an offer Patterson couldn’t turn down.
“My time here in Nanaimo has been a great experience for me, and I’m grateful for the support the organization has given me to develop and grow my career. This was not an easy decision for me to make, but to be able to come home every night to my family, I felt I needed to pursue it. I have all the respect for everyone involved with the Clippers and wish all the best to the players, coaches, and entire staff.”
Clippers coach Colin Birkas is happy to see his now former assistant get the new post but admits it leaves a huge hole in the organization.
“Gaelan is very detailed and organized, so Surrey has gained a tremendous asset. On top of that, he became a good friend. I’m going to miss going to work with my friend every day. It was one of the perks of the job.”
Patterson left with the Clippers in top spot in the Coastal West Division with a 10-5 record.
His new role will be challenging with the Eagles sitting at 4-13 and in last place in the Coastal Conference.
The Clippers will begin the search for a new full-time assistant, but in the meantime, part-time coach Evan Richardson will take on some extra responsibilities.
Nanaimo will start a five-game home stand with games on Nov. 6 versus Spruce Grove and Nov. 7 against the Prince George Spruce Kings.
The Clippers and Eagles have three more head-to-head matchups this year.
Nanaimo will visit Surrey on Jan. 3 and 9, and Patterson will make his return to Frank Crank Arena for a game on Feb. 20.
