NANAIMO — A sunny weekend at the beach was interrupted by a boat which caught fire.
The motor boat was engulfed in flame in the middle of Long Lake on Sunday, June 20 just after 4 p.m.
“We are not sure what happened or started the fire, but some jet skis accompanied it over towards the Island highway where the docks are,” Hilary Nemet, a witness of the fire, told NanaimoNewsNOW.
Nanaimo Fire Rescue crews met the boat and hosed it down to extinguish the flame.
Witnesses at the beach said no ambulances arrived on scene and it’s not believed anyone was injured.
“People got their kids out of the water in case any gas or oil was going to come towards the beach,” Nemet said.
Those who’d left the water returned by 4:30 p.m. to continue frolicking.
