AL RAYYAN, QATAR — The historic milestone of Canada’s first ever World Cup goal is out of the way, however their first win remains elusive.
Canada fell to Croatia by a 4-1 score in their second game of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar on Sunday, Nov. 27. Canada were seeking a win to keep their hopes for the knockout stage alive.
After missing a penalty against Belgium last week Alphonso Davis got the dream start for Canada, taking a 1-0 lead inside the opening two minutes after Davies connected with a header from a cross and scored Canada’s first ever goal at a World Cup.
The country’s only other World Cup appearance in 1986 saw the team lose all three games without scoring a goal.
Croatia were able to get themselves into the game with some pressure and chances on Canada’s goal, scoring twice in eight minutes from Andrej Kramaric and Marko Livaja to lead 2-1 at half time
The lead was extended through Kramaric’s second in the 70th minute, then again on a breakaway from Lovro Majer during injury time in the second half.
Croatia outshot Canada 13-6, with shots on target also heavily favouring Croatia by a 10-2 margin. Canada did carry a slight majority of the possession, 52 per cent of play.
The loss means Canada will not advance to the knockout stage after failing to pick up a point in their opening two games.
Results from games on Thursday, Dec. 1 will decide which two of Croatia, Morocco and Belgium will advance.
Canada wrap their tournament Thursday, Dec. 1 against Morocco, who defeated Belgium 2-0 earlier Sunday.
