Oct 3rd – QR Headstones
Did you know… you can get a headstone with a QR code on it? There is a company called “Living Headstones” that does this and when the QR code is scanned it shows pages with photos, video biographies, and comments from loved ones! It costs about $150 dollars. QR codes offer everyone a chance to get to know a stranger whose name makes a passerby curious. Question is, do you want everyone who passes your headstone to know everything about your life? I’ve always appreciated the sort of mystery reading someone’s name wondering what kind of life they lived… One thing for sure, I hope they don’t include old Facebook status… remember how embarrassing some of those were?
Oct 4th – Pumpkins for Dinner
Did you know… Every single part of a pumpkin is edible? Yep, you can eat the skin, leaves, flowers, pulp, seeds and even the vines! It’s the season for them! Here are some ideas:
-Pumpkin Seeds: Roast pumpkin seeds with a little salt and olive oil.
-Pumpkin Leaves: Include pumpkin leaves in stir fry, soups or stews.
-Pumpkin Flowers: Pumpkin flowers are great in salads or stuffed with rice and veggies.
-Pumpkin Fruit: Pumpkin fruit is a classic, but did you know you can eat the skin? Make pumpkin chips and pair with a nice dip. Air fryer here we come!
Oct 5th – Curious Crows
Did you know… Crows can remember your face AND hold a grudge against you??!!!! Based on studies it was proven crows can remember individual faces for up to five years. AND they are likely to attack or act aggressively toward anyone who has caused them great stress. Five years is long time for a bird to be able to remember your face. Especially since the lifespan of THE average wild crow is only 13 years. You want to know another wild thing? Not only will they remember you, but CROWS CAN pass the information about YOU on to other crows. If a crow has a particularly stressful experience with someone, it will tell other crows about it. They’ll basically smack talk you to each other at the crow water cooler. Next time you’re telling a crow to scram, I would think twice…. you don’t want to get caught in a crow dive bomb!
Oct 6th – Meaning of “Jingle Pot”
Did you know where the term Jingle Pot comes from? Jingle Pot Road, is apparently named after a tool used by coal miners! According to an exhibit at the museum, a “jingle pot” was a pot with a few stones in it, attached to a rope. Miners pulled on the rope to make the pot make noise when they wanted to signal that it was time to start hoisting carts full of coal out of the mine. Cool! And with all the mining that went on in Nanaimo many years ago, it’s no wonder we have so many Jingle Pot Roads!
