Join me every day around 4:20pm for the Daily Dee-straction!
We’ll cover something you didn’t know about OR something you did know about and are about to find out MORE about! If you missed it, here is this week’s round up!
Oct 16th – Roadside Attraction
Did you know… There’s a Shell gas station in the states shaped like a shell? Eight were built in the 1930s, but there is only one left and it’s in North Carolina. It no longer pumps gas, but it’s a pretty awesome marketing story! The 18-foot tall shell was the work of marketing geniuses at the Quality Oil Company, a marketer of Shell Oil. They decided to build stations shaped like giant shells to lure in customers. Shell had not marketed its products in North Carolina so they knew they needed something to attract customers. The shell stations were a hit, serving up gas to motorists in needs for decades! Guess it does pay off to think outside the box… literally!
Oct 17th – Alphabet Order
Did you know… The last letter added to the alphabet was actually “J”, not “Z”??
Oct 18th – Airport-less places
Did you know… there are five countries in the world that don’t have airports? They are: Vatican City, San Marino, Monaco, Liechtenstein, and Andorra. They are the five countries in the world you can’t technically fly into. But, having been to a few of these places myself, I can see why! When I went to Vatican City, we had basically walked through it in the span of 20 mins. You’d need the length of at least three Vatican cities to even fit an average plane runway. I did the math! The city is approx. 1km long and the average plane runway is around 2-3kms long!
Oct 19th – Horror and art, a match made in heaven?
Did you know… watching horror movies before viewing abstract art may enhance the experience for you?? According to a report from Scientific American, researchers asked a group of people to do one of four different activities: jumping jacks, sit around, and watch a scary movie or a happy one. Afterwards, they were shown abstract art. The group that watched the scary movie were more likely to have a “sublime and positive” experience from viewing the art then any other group. Sounds like a really fun October date night!! Take her out for a scary movie and then the art museum!!
Oct 20th – The LARGEST Nanaimo Bar!
Did you know… The largest Nanaimo bar record was achieved by a ten year old and her five year old brother?? Ella Kurtis and Austin Kurtis in Ontario, Canada finished the bar on March 5 in 2020 and it weighed in at about 530 pounds and measured eight feet long (longer than a queen sized mattress!!). Of course they DID get some help from their parents who own the Northwest Fudge Factory. Over the course of two days, the siblings worked before and after school, mixing the ingredients and pouring them into a form. It took them about 10 hours! An original Nanaimo bar recipe had to be multiplied by 200!! Sadly, because this was three years ago, there is none left for us to enjoy.
