Join me every day around 4:20pm for the Daily Dee-straction!
We’ll cover something you didn’t know about OR something you did know about and are about to find out MORE about! If you missed it, here is this week’s round up!
Nov 15 – Play-Doh & Wallpaper
Did you know… Play-Doh started out as a wallpaper cleaner? Founded in 1912 in Cincinnati, Kutol Products had a soft, pliable compound used for wiping soot from wallpaper, but with the transition from coal to oil, gas and electricity, soot buildup was no longer an issue in many households. The company’s future looked bleak! Fortunately, the sister-in-law of one of the employees had an idea to let kids play with it. She even suggested the name change to Play-Doh. And boy, what a good idea that was! According to Fortune, Play-Doh has sold more than three billion cans since its debut as a child’s toy in 1956!
Nov 16th – Subway Combos
In honour of national fast food day today, did you know… that Subway’s menu has nearly 38 million possible combinations! So if you ever find yourself not sure what to order, I wouldn’t blame you! I can never decide what kind of bread I want haha! Also, did you know that prior to Subway, it was called Pete’s Super Submarines! Plus, the average cost of a sub was 49 cents!!! This was back in the 60s… yeah but I bet you still had to pay extra for avocado!
Nov 17th – Nanaimo and the King
Did you know… King Charles had a hand in designating our city as the Harbour City??? Back in ‘86 during their official visit to Canada, then Prince Charles and Princess Diana visited Nanaimo, and they signed a declaration designating Nanaimo OFFICIALLY as “The Harbour City.” The certificate hangs in City Hall! Nanaimo has also been called the Hub City… and I didn’t know this… The name apparently refers to downtown’s distinctive fan-shaped street pattern, which kind of looks like spokes of a wheel!
