Oct 23rd – Wine Month?
Did you know… October has had a few different names? Anglo-Saxons named the month-Winterfylleth. This name is formed by two words- winter and full moon respectively because winter was believed to begin from the first full moon of October. Another name that was assigned to October was Wyn Monath. The meaning of the word Wyn Monath in English is “wine month”. This name was given to October because, YOU GUESSED IT this was the time when most of the wines were made. It’s not October, it’s Wine Month. Now that’s the re-brand of the century!
Oct 24th – Autumn Babies
Did you know… If you have a fall birthday, there are chances that you will live longer than people born in other seasons of the year?? NO WAY. The study was published in the Journal of Aging Research if you want to look it up yourself! According to the study, researchers at The University of Chicago found that people born in autumn have a higher probability of surviving to the age of 100 than those born in other months. While the reason behind this phenomenon remains a mystery, scientists do have a few theories. The most popular hypothesis involves seasonal illness, and the idea that being born in the fall exposes infants to sicknesses that ultimately impact their longevity. Is the other theory just that autumn babies rule??? Oh sorry, my bias (I was born in October) is showing LOL!
Oct 25th – Airplane Food
Did you know… You lose a large percentage of your taste buds while on an airplane. It’s not just your imagination! According to a German study, under dry and low air pressure conditions, the sensitivity of our taste buds to sweet and salty food is reduced by 30%. This might explain why in-flight meals are kind of bleh, or why you find yourself craving the saltiest foods while flying. Pretzels just hit different mid-air!
Oct 26th – Michael Myers and Shatner
Did you know… the Michael Myers mask from the movie Halloween has some pretty innocent roots! It might even change how you watch the films! When shooting the first movie, production designer Tommy Lee Wallace picked up two masks from a Hollywood Boulevard magic shop: he found a clown mask and William Shatner mask as Captain Kirk in Star Trek. Apparently he came in with the clown mask on, and the crew said, ‘Ooh, that’s kind of scary.’ BUT THEN, he put on the Shatner mask, and everyone stopped dead and said, ‘It’s perfect,’. They spray painted it white, made the eye holes bigger and the rest is history!!
Oct 27th – Beban House Nanaimo
Did you know… there are rumors that Nanaimo’s Beban House is haunted?? There have been many stories throughout the years, like faucets turning on by themselves and eerie sounds.The log house was built in 1930 by Frank Beban, a wealthy sawmill owner. A former tenant of the old mansion, recalls hearing a ball bounce down the stairs while she worked late at night – and couldn’t find any evidence of a ball after looking! Also, sometime before 1997, two children years apart claimed to have played with a boy wearing a white gown who also had a long braid. One of them mentioned he had been playing with a red ball. Creepy!!
