Nov 6 – Shakespeare hates November?
Did you know… The renowned playwright, Shakespeare, wrote a total of 37 plays and 154 sonnets in the English language, but he did not make any mention of the month of November in any of his writings! He gave us so many common phrases that we use today like, “In a Pickle”, “Love Is Blind”, “Wear My Heart on My Sleeve”, “Wild Goose Chase” and inspired SOOO many of our favourite movies 10 Things I hate About You, She’s The Man, West Side story, not to mention the MANY other cultural contributions, but he never ONCE mentions November?? Wild!
Nov 7th – KitKat Varieties
Did you know… there have been more than 300 flavors of Kit Kat made in Japan since 2000? Nestlé would release these regional and seasonal flavours and then a tradition started where people would bring back different varieties for family and co-workers from trips away (because some flavours would be so scarce). Here are some of the unique flavours they’ve made throughout the years! You’re not going to find any of these in the Halloween candy bag, I promise! Kit Kats such as Red Bean, Japanese Horseradish, Apple, Soy Sauce, Orange, Salted Caramel, Fruit Parfait, Maple Syrup, Cherry Blossom, Custard, Tiramisu, Kiwi, Potato and probably my favourite… Break me off a piece of that Pumpkin Cheesecake Kit Kat bar!
Nov 8th – Moustaches
Did you know… The average man touches his mustache 760 times A DAY! That’s according to Dr. Peterkin author of 1000 Mustaches: A Cultural History of the Mo. I’m not going to lie, if my boyfriend had a mustache I would probably touch it too LOL! I can imagine women probably touch their hair almost as much! P.S. Movember fundraisers are on right now and make a HUGE difference in mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer… moustaches are really in right now, so you’ll look cool while contributing to a great cause!
Nov 9th – Minerva Mouse
Did you know… Minnie the Mouse’s first name is not Minnie. It’s actually Minerva but it’s rarely used! Minnie Mouse is a nickname that was given to the character by Walt Disney. Here are some more things you maybe didn’t know about the popular mouse! Minnie first appeared in the short Steamboat Willie, released in November wayyyy back in 1928. Apparently in the 1950s, she faded into obscurity altogether, and was only reintroduced three decades later… with the premiere of the 1988 television special Totally Minnie, her first starring role!! Go Minnie!! She later went on to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2018. Girl power!
Nov 10th – It’s hot in here!
Did you know… Nanaimo has a pretty big span between its hottest day and its coldest day on record! Here are the temperature records for our Harbour City. The highest temperature ever recorded in Nanaimo was 40.6 °C on in July of 1941 (back in 2021 we came pretty close to beating that at 40.4 °C). The record high in Canada is 49.6 °C. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Nanaimo was −20.0 °C (−4 °F) on 30 December 1968. The record low in Canada is −63.0 °C from of course, you guessed it, the Yukon.
